Rebel. Now.

Rebel. Now.

In our post-truth, post-fact, hyper-connected, over-scheduled, stressed out, covfefe #resistance world, there has never been a more important time to Rebel. Now.

Knowledge is power. When we don’t have the full story, or understanding of the full story, it is difficult to make the best choices for ourselves and our families. Instead we passively take what is handed to us, day in and day out, never fully present, engaged or aware of the opportunities and possibilities we are missing.

It is no secret that our food and health & beauty products are riddled with chemicals. But what most of us don’t know is just how harmful these chemicals actually are. Now, in all fairness, it doesn’t help that we don’t always know what toxic chemicals are in our products. Currently, in Canada, companies aren’t required to put all of their ingredients on their product list. In fact, there are chemicals that are banned in products in the US and Europe that haven’t been banned in Canada (we are looking at you Triclosan). Toxic products that can now be dumped into the Canadian market for us to consume. Yay for us, said no one ever.

“How bad is it really?” you might be asking yourself. Here is the thing: we don’t really know how bad it is. No one does. That is the problem. Most chemicals that are allowed in products and are considered "safe" are based on a single use. A quick snap shot, if you will, of a single moment in your day rather than looking at the FULL picture of how each singly used product consecutively adds up. Research shows that the average woman puts on 168 chemicals a day (roughly 12 products). That's 12 times the "safe" limit just getting ready to leave the house each morning. That doesn't include all the other products like hand soap, dish soap, moisturizers, sunscreens, plastics or cleaning products that most of us come into contact with daily.

The truth is, to fully understand what we put in our bodies and on our bodies is overwhelming, confusing and down right scary. Which makes it easy to bury our heads in the sand and not do anything about it. We know, we've been there. We also know that there is no Superman who is going to save us. The only way we are going to achieve clean, safe, toxic and chemical-free food and products for ourselves and our families is together.

We are two moms with young kids who are sick and tired of being confused with ingredients, overwhelmed with labels that don't make sense and exhausted with trying to figure out what is "safe" and what isn't. Anyone?! After 17 years in LA, Vancouver native Kirsten Siggins recently moved to Toronto with her husband and two young kids. With a history of cancer and allergies in her family, what she puts in their bellies and on their skin matters. She found there was a blind faith when it came to products and food, people consistently telling her that Canada was "safe" and she didn't need to worry about toxins and chemicals. Curious to know more, she did some digging only to find out just how little awareness and understanding there actually is. Sudbury native Mollie Wilkins has lived in Toronto for 15 years and has growing concerns with a 7 year old daughter about what goes on her skin, and she too feels there is a lack of awareness and education. After speaking with friends, the clean beauty industry felt "too hard" to navigate. It takes too much time to understand what should be avoided and what shouldn't, or to search out products that actually work. A quick poll showed that most purchased their health and beauty products in the 'health' section of the grocery store trusting that the products were safe for themselves and their families, never giving it a second thought.

When we realized we had more questions than answers we knew it was time to do something about it. We want our kids to be safe, healthy, and chemical FREE. Something we believe ALL moms want. However, with the way regulations currently stand, it is much much harder than you think. We also want products that are high quality, beautiful and actually work! The good news is, Canada is full of beautiful, high quality clean products - many of them based in Toronto.

So, welcome to the party!  We are here to host knowledge from industry experts so you don't have to. Don’t worry, we aren’t going to Goop you. No crystals in our yonis here. Although, we do love and appreciate their meticulous vetting of chemicals and support of clean living. Rebels in the Six is about inspiring the Rebel inside you.
