6 In The Six: Spotlight On Local
It’s no secret that clean beauty is on the rise. The industry is growing at a rapid rate with more and more people deciding it’s time to make the switch – whether for health reasons, environmental reasons, ethical reasons or all three! And while these companies may not be brand new, it’s just plain awesome to see so many amazing products coming out of Canada and specifically Toronto. Maybe you’ve heard of some or all, or maybe you’re just getting started in this sector. Either way, these six companies are worth learning about and supporting. Your skin will thank you!
Muni Muni Skincare
The name is pronounced ‘moonie moonie’ and means ‘to think deeply, to ponder.’ And this is exactly what this skincare company has done in producing their products. Each one is thoughtfully created, carefully researched and 100% natural, ethical and environmentally friendly.
Founder Graydon Moffat began experimenting with superfood skincare ingredients in her kitchen with a goal to create products that are as luxurious and effective as any mainstream brand out there. She believes in fueling the body through the skin using bio-available ingredients, including but not limited to chia, avocado and broccoli. All of Graydon’s products are plant based and plant powered. Omega rich oils, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals all work together to nourish your skin and are gluten free, almost all vegan and organic whenever possible. Interesting side note: though nuts contain many incredible nourishing and boosting qualities, Graydon has opted to not use them in her products due to the prevalence of nut related allergies.
Honey, distilled flower waters and essential oils are at the root of this Toronto based natural skincare company. Their passionate, no BS attitude is so refreshing – they’re not trying to sell any promises here. They’re not claiming they’ve discovered the fountain of youth and that you’ll look 10 years younger. But they are promising healthy skin that feels great.
Crawford Street Skincare
In 2010 following a severe allergic reaction to a drugstore face cream, founder Gaelyne Leslie decided to take action. With a background in investigative journalism, her research holds no bounds and she set out to source and experiment with natural ingredients to develop the best skincare line with no harmful toxins or hidden chemicals. Crawford Street Skincare is the result of this. Gaelyne always chooses fair trade, organic and sustainable where available.
Organic sunflower oil from Ontario, organic seaweed from Nova Scotia, organic raspberry oil and glacial clay from BC, maple syrup from Quebec… you get the idea (and the idea behind the name!) Founder, certified holistic esthetician and aromatherapist Julie Clark began experimenting with raw materials and natural ingredients in 2010 after struggling with allergies and eczema all of her life. The result is Province Apothecary and it’s not just products – it’s an experience. They offer treatments and rituals including a natural facelift ritual that stimulates and invigorates while detoxifying. You can download it here!
Leaves of Trees
A modern apothecary for men and women. Everything is made in house, by hand and small batch. Founder Dr. Roohi Qureshi (she holds a masters in chemical engineering and a passion for high quality, natural, fair trade products) mixes good science with thoughtful design and ethical practice. While proudly Canadian, Morocco was the inspiration behind the brand (following Roohi’s first visit) and many of LOT’s ingredients are sourced from there, including hand pressed organic Argan oil from a women’s cooperative.
